Can I lend my bike to a friend or family member?

Updated today

Can I lend my bike to a friend or family member? Whether it’s letting a family member use your commuter or lending your pride and joy to a mate for a weekend epic, we want the Collective to have your back.

How does Laka coverage work for family members?

If a family member lives at your registered address, that family member is fully covered for theft (and accidental damage for Laka Complete customers) while using your insured gear, provided the family member has your permission to use the bicycle.

Can I lend my bike to a friend, or family member who lives somewhere else?

If you want to cover a friend or someone who doesn't live with you, that person generally needs their own Laka policy. This ensures the Collective's monthly contributions remain accurate and fair for everyone. Without their own policy, a friend is not covered for damage or loss while riding your bike.

Does my Personal Cover apply to other people?

No, it doesn’t. While the physical bike is covered when used by permitted residents, Personal Cover (including Third-Party Liability) does not transfer to other riders.

Third-Party Liability: This covers only the named Laka policyholder. If your friend crashes into a car while riding your bike, they are not covered by your Laka liability insurance.

Health & Recovery: These benefits are specific to the individual policyholder. If a friend is injured while using your gear, they cannot claim through your Laka policy.

Our suggestion?

If your friends or non-resident family members are regular riders, encourage them to join the Collective themselves so they’re protected. If you refer them you could also get rewarded for doing so!
