Can I leave my bike locked outside for a weekend or holiday?

Updated this week

Is my bike covered if I leave it in a public place for more than 24 hours?

No, it’s not. To keep things fair for the entire The Collective, Laka cannot provide cover for bicycles left in public places for extended periods. Leaving a bicycle unattended for days at a time significantly increases the risk of theft, which isn't fair to the rest of the community. Because of this, Laka policies include an "Abandoned" exclusion.

What does abandoned mean?

In the context of your Laka policy, "abandoned" refers to the length of time a bicycle is left in a public space. This rule ensures that the monthly contribution remains low for everyone by reducing avoidable risks.

  • Public Locations: If the bicycle is left in a public location for longer than the 24-hour limit specified in your Policy Schedule, the bicycle is considered abandoned.

  • Coverage Status: Once a bicycle is categorised as abandoned, the theft cover is voided.

Where should I store my bike during a holiday or long weekend?

If you’re heading off for a holiday or a long weekend, please ensure the bicycle is stored securely in a private or communal location as defined in the Laka policy. Secure storage options include:

  • Your private home.

  • A Locked Garage.

  • A Shed or Outbuilding that meets the security requirements.

Storing the bicycle in these locations ensures your cover remains active and supports the stability of The Collective.
