Is my bike covered if I keep it in a public bike hanger?

While public bike hangers are a great way to store your ride in the city, they are treated differently than your flat or house in your Laka policy.

Is a bike hanger covered for theft under "Home" or "Away from Home"?

For insurance purposes, a public bike hanger is classified as a Communal Storage Location, even if it is right outside your front door. This is because you do not have sole access control over the unit.

Because it is "Communal," you must follow Laka's "Theft Away from Home" security rules.

Do I need to lock my bike inside the hanger?

Yes, simply locking the hanger’s external door is not enough to protect The Collective. To be fully covered against theft, your bicycle must be:

  1. Locked through the frame: The lock must pass through the main frame of the bike.

  2. Attached to an immovable object: You must secure the bike to the internal rack of the hanger.

  3. Secured with a Gold lock: You must use a Sold Secure Gold (or Diamond) rated lock.

What are the rules for storing cargo bikes in hangers?

If you’re a Laka Core customer storing a cargo bike in a public hanger, the requirements are higher due to the increased risk. You must use two Sold Secure Gold-rated locks:

  • Primary Lock: Must secure the frame to the internal rack of the hanger.

  • Secondary Lock: Must also secure the frame to the internal rack. If that isn't possible, the second lock must secure a major component (like a wheel) to the frame.
