Do I have to lock my bike even if I can still see it?

Updated this week

Can I leave my bicycle unlocked and still be covered for theft?

At Laka, we know that mid-ride coffee stops and train journeys are part of the ritual. To keep things fair for The Collective, our locking requirements only kick in when a bicycle is left unattended.

As long as you can see your bicycle, meaning you are close enough to keep an eye on your gear, it isn't unattended. In these moments, you don't need a lock on the bicycle to stay covered.

This is especially handy for:

  • On the train: If your bicycle is in the rack but you are sat nearby with a clear view of the bicycle.

  • Coffee stops: If you are sitting outside and your bicycle is right next to your table.

When do I need to lock my bicycle?

The moment your bicycle is no longer in your view, it is unattended. This is when you should use your lock to stay covered.

If you are heading inside a cafe to order or grab a table, you should lock your bicycle. To ensure Laka can pay out claims fairly and protect the funds of The Collective, we can't cover a bicycle that is stolen while it's out of your sight and unlocked. Even if you are only popping in for a minute, use your Sold Secure Gold-rated lock!
