How do I secure my bicycle at a campsite or remote location?

Updated yesterday

How do I stay covered by Laka while camping?

Heading off-grid? We love to see it. To keep things fair for The Collective and ensure we can keep your monthly contribution low, we must ensure your gear is as safe in the wild as it is at home.

When you’re at a campsite or a remote spot, our 'Theft Away from Home' rules apply. Here’s how to stay covered:

What are the locking requirements for remote locations?

  • Locking up: You must lock your bicycle through the frame to an immovable object (such as a permanent ground anchor or a solid metal fence) using a Sold Secure Gold-rated lock.

  • Using a tent: A tent is not an immovable object or a private storage location because access is not strictly controlled. Please do not leave your bicycle in a tent and consider it "secure".

  • Using a caravan: If your bicycle is stored outside the caravan and is unattended, you must still use your Sold Secure Gold-rated lock to secure it to a fixed point. A caravan is considered an immovable object.

  • Inside storage: If your bicycle is stored inside a locked vehicle or a caravan that you control, this falls under temporary private storage.

Why do these security rules matter?

By using the right lock and a solid anchor point, you are doing your part to prevent avoidable claims. This proactive security helps keep the monthly contribution down for every member of The Collective.

If you are unsure if a structure at your campsite counts as an immovable object, ask yourself: "Can this be moved without specialist tools?" If the answer is "Yes, it can.", then the object is not a secure anchor point for your bicycle.
