Is My E-bike Eligible for Insurance?

Updated this week

How do I know if my e-bike is eligible for Laka insurance?

Not sure if your e-bike qualifies for cover? Don't worry - checking is straightforward. As long as your ride meets the UK legal requirements for an e-bike, it’s more than welcome in the Laka Collective.

What are the UK legal requirements for e-bikes (EAPCs)?

To keep things fair for the collective and ensure everyone is riding legally, your e-bike must meet the UK Government’s specific rules for Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs). To be eligible for Laka cover, the e-bike must:

  • Be pedal-powered: The e-bike must have pedals that can be used to move it.

  • Limit motor power: The electric motor's maximum continuous rated power must not exceed 250 watts.

  • Cut off at the limit: The electrical assistance must automatically stop when the e-bike reaches 15.5mph (25kph).

You can usually find these specifications in your e-bike manual or on a sticker located on the bike frame.

Does Laka cover modified or "chipped" e-bikes?

No, we don’t. If an e-bike has been "chipped" or modified to exceed the 250W power limit or the 15.5mph speed limit, it is legally classified as a motor vehicle rather than a bicycle. For this reason, modified e-bikes cannot be covered by Laka’s bicycle insurance.
